GETTING ASSIGNMENTS
Q. I've
been published several times as a freelance writer, but how do I move
from freelancing to getting assignments directly from editors? Is
this something that happens at an editor's initiative, or is there a
part that the writer plays too? I've been published in one
publication three times. Is this part of the process toward receiving
assignments?
A. You are on the right track. Assignments typically come to writers who have been published a number of times in a particular publication, and have shown the editor that they understand the specific needs of the publication, and of their readers. Just be sure the publication you are targeting actually makes assignments. A few just depend on submissions from freelancers. However, most will assign feature articles or articles that reflect the theme of each issue (if the publication is theme oriented), and depend on freelance submissions for the rest.
I
would suggest that you do an in-depth analysis of any publications
that you would want assignments from, and start sending queries for
articles that are closely aligned to their needs. If you display an
intimate understanding of the editor's needs, you are bound to be
noticed. This is particularly true if you are able to write articles
on more obscure topics—but ones that they need. Editors typically
are flooded with articles or queries on the more common aspects of
their target, so are looking for writers who can come up with related
articles that explore something new or unique. As you seek out those
publications you would like to write for, look for those that need
something you are uniquely qualified to write—or that requires
specialized know-how you have. For example, for a publication that
targets families, don't offer the same kind of articles they get all
the time. Determine how you can make your query stand out because it
offers something new and exciting for their readers.
After
you have started building a relationship with the editor, and have
had a half dozen pieces accepted, it is also OK to let the editor
know you are open to assignments, as long as you don't push the
issue. But chances are, by the time you reach that point, the editor
is likely to bring it up without any prompting from you. Editors are
always on the look-out for writers who have proved they can provide
what the editor needs, meets deadlines, and has a passion for the
needs of the readers.

STORIES PUBLISHED--OR NOT?
Q. About 18
months ago, I sold three stories to a children's take-home paper, and
they were to have been published about 4 or 5 months ago. They
promised to send contributor's copies when they were published. I did
receive copies of the first one about two months before publication,
but the proposed dates for the second and third have passed and I
still haven't seen any copies. Should I assume they decided not to
publish them? Or that they did and forgot to send the copies? If they
decided not to publish them, can I ask to sell first rights to
another publication?
A. I would start by contacting the editor by e-mail or mail asking if the stories were published as planned, and letting him know that if they were, you did not receive your contributor's copies. Also, if they were not published as scheduled, have they rescheduled their publication? Wait for their response before taking any additional action.
If
they were published, the editor will likely let you know that and
send along the contributor's copies. However, if the response is they
have rescheduled them at a future date, wait for that new publication
date. If the samples don't arrive, or the response is that they have
decided not to publish, you can then ask them to release the rights
to you. In that case, you would be able to sell first rights to the
two that were never published. In either case, you can sell reprint
rights to the first story as long as you sold them only first rights.

TAKING A BREAK
Just wanted to give you a heads-up to let you know I'll be away from the computer for a few days and won't be able to keep up with the blog until I return. Working on the next market guide has been exhausting, so a break will be nice. Also I wanted to remind you if you have a listing in the guide (or want one) for a group, conference, editorial service, or periodical, you need to get that info to me in the next few days. Just e-mail it to stuartcwmg@aol.com.

Avoid run-on sentences, but don't overreact by

FRUSTRATED PUBLISHER?
Q - What do the book publishers say
that authors do that frustrates them the most?
A -
Most authors simply don’t make any effort to learn anything more
about a publisher than what they find in the market guide. They would
love it if you would actually read some of the books they have
published in your genre or subject area to get a feeling for their
tone or approach to the topic. They also get upset when writers don’t
follow their guidelines. Although most publishers want to see
basically the same kind of information in a proposal, each publisher
puts its own twist on the process and they expect you to follow their
guidelines carefully. They are especially interested in the market
research they expect you to do for them. Let them know how your book
fits into what is already available in the marketplace. You cause
them all kinds of headaches when you miss your deadlines, don’t
send them what your proposal has promised, or are reluctant or
resistant when it comes to the editing and rewriting process. You
never want to be labeled a “difficult author.”

EPA SELECTS NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
The Evangelical Press Association Board of Directors has announced the appointment of CFO Lamar Keener as the new Executive Director of the association, effective January 15, 2015.
The action follows the resignation of current Executive Director D'Arcy Maher, who informed the Board in December that she was stepping down in light of new opportunities for a joint ministry with her husband.
"In the final months of 2014, my husband and I received an invitation to work together as a team in an international capacity," Maher said. "After prayerful consideration, we are walking through the steps to finalize this significant decision. Releasing the role at EPA is certainly bittersweet, but it's the right time in order for the association to continue moving forward."
"D'Arcy has served the association well, and while we will miss her, we celebrate this new opportunity with her," said President-elect Mark Winz, who presided over the discussion and voting.
After considering several options, the EPA Board voted unanimously to offer the position to Keener, who has been serving in a part-time business management role for EPA since 2012. His role will now expand to include Executive Director.
"Lamar's wealth of industry knowledge, professionalism and marketing expertise make him a great fit," said Winz. "Since he's already on staff, he will be able to seamlessly step in to keep the work of the association moving forward."
Keener has been an active member of EPA for more than 25 years. He was the publisher of the award-winning Christian Examiner newspaper group from 1988 to 2014, and he is the current publisher of Refreshed magazine, launched last year. He previously served as Treasurer and President of the EPA Board.
