STEPS
TO FOLLOW
Go to
and read the primary listing for each publisher on your topical list.
As you do, watch for clues that indicate if this is or is not a
market for you. Cross off any that are disqualified after this
initial reading. Often the descriptive statement or tips at the end
of most listings will give an indication that your material won’t
fit some of them.
For
those still on the list, find in your files or send for a copy of the
publication and their writers’ guidelines. Read the copy or copies
cover to cover and read the guidelines carefully, highlighting any
statements that indicate this is or is not a potential market. Again,
decide whether to leave this market on your list or cross it off.
What you’re doing is refining a list of the most likely publishers
for each of your topics or types of writing.
